‘Canes continue strong start to winter season

The men’s and women’s volleyball and basketball Hurricanes had a strong weekend of Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season play at home and on the road.  Here’s what you need to know.

 

Women’s Volleyball

The Holland Hurricanes women’s volleyball team picked up a straight-sets win over the Crandall University Chargers at home on Friday before defeating the Université de Sainte-Anne (USTA) Dragons in four sets on Saturday on the road.

On Friday, set scores were 25-20, 25-23, and 25-19.

Ava Beisal led the attack with nine kills with Amanda de Carvalho Brito adding seven and Sam Gerbig six.

Gerbig had an incredible game from the service line recording eight aces with three others recording three.

Jenna MacFarlane had a match-high 12 digs while Shayla Reding had a match-high 23 assists in the win.

On Saturday, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 21-25, 25-13, 25-23, and 27-25.

Beisal once again led the attack with 14 kills with Gerbig right behind with 12. Kateia Barenaba chipped in with eight and Jenna O’Neill added six.

Gerbig had another great serving game with nine aces to go along with 14 digs on defense.

MacFarlane led the defensive effort with 17 digs with Beisal adding 14 and O’Neill with 12.

Reding dished out a match-high 33 assists in the win.

The Hurricanes are off to a 6-0 start to the season and lead the conference. The Chargers are 0-6 and in ninth place while the Dragons are 1-4 and tied for seventh.

The women’s volleyball Hurricanes return to action on Sunday, November 21 when they host the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown at noon.

Men’s Volleyball

The Holland Hurricanes men’s volleyball team pulled off a comeback victory on Saturday to win in five sets over the USTA Dragons in Church Point, Nova Scotia.  They followed this up with a four-set loss on Sunday, also to the Dragons.

In the men’s win on Saturday, set scores were 22-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22 and 15-10.

Luke Hyde led the attack with 24 kills with Ben MacDougall adding 17 and Nathan Baker ten.

Brandon Hastings dished out 37 assists in the win.

Marcus Lapointe led a balanced defensive effort with 15 digs with Hyde adding 12, Baker 11, and MacDougall and Hasting with ten each.

Hyde also added six aces with MacDougall recording four.

In the loss on Sunday, set scores were 22-25, 25-22, 25-14 and 25-22.

Hyde and MacDougall led the attack again with 15 and 11 kills respectively.

Hastings had 27 assists and nine digs with Lapointe leading the way in digs with 11 and Hyde recording ten.

The Hurricanes now sit at 1-3 on the season and are in third place while the Dragons are 3-1 and in second place.

The men’s volleyball ‘Canes will see action again on Saturday, November 20 on the road when they take on the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves at 6pm on Saturday and 12pm on Sunday.

Women’s Basketball

The Holland Hurricanes women’s basketball team was victorious over the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday by a score of 82-58.

The ‘Canes started strong, opening up a 30-15 lead after one quarter. An even second quarter would see the ‘Canes lead 47-32 at the half with a strong third quarter giving them a 65-43 lead after three. The ‘Canes would build up a 78-48 lead in the fourth before a late Seawolves run brought it to an 82-58 final score.

Karla Benitez led the ‘Canes with 15 points with Ashley Plaggenhoef, Lisa Bolander, and Amy Plaggenhoef all adding 14.

Benitez added six rebounds and six steals with both Plaggenhoefs adding three rebounds and two three-pointers.

The ‘Canes move to 2-1 on the season and are one of three teams tied for third with four points, while the Seawolves sit at 0-4 and are tied for sixth.

 

Men’s Basketball

The Holland Hurricanes men’s basketball team picked up a 104-82 victory over the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday.

In the men’s game, the ‘Canes came out firing and took a 35-21 lead after the first quarter, but the Seawolves would close the game in the second with the ‘Canes holding a 50-41 lead at the break.

The ‘Canes came out strong in the third and took a 77-56 lead after three. A high scoring fourth quarter increased the ‘Canes lead by a point for the 104-82 win.

Bryce Corless led all scorers with 26 points, hitting seven three-pointers. Jashajaun Downey (17 points), Jalen Menzies (14 points and three rebounds), Jordan Holness (13 points and four rebounds), and Logan Rempel (12 points and four rebounds) all contributed to the win.

The ‘Canes are 3-0 to start the season and sit in first place while the Seawolves are 0-4 and in seventh.

The men’s and women’s basketball ‘Canes return to the court on Saturday, November 20 when they host the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies at 3 and 5pm. On Sunday the ‘Canes are back in action when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves at 2 and 4pm (women/men). All games at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown.

Also in action last week was the women’s soccer Hurricanes at the 2021 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships in Toronto, Ontario, hosted by the Humber College Hawks.

The ‘Canes dropped their quarter-final game to the top-ranked, and eventual national champion, Vanier College Cheetahs (Montreal, PQ), 7-0. The Hurricanes season would come to an end after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Fanshawe College Falcons (London, Ontario) in the bronze medal quarter-final.

The Hurricanes were the 2021 ACAA Champions.
