
The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams swept the Crandall University Chargers in Moncton, New Brunswick on Saturday evening in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season action. The women won by a score of 71-59, while the men edged out the Chargers, 78-76.
In the women’s game, the ‘Canes jumped out to a 22-14 lead after the first quarter and would extend it to 37-28 at the half. The ‘Canes would continue to build their lead to 59-45 after three and 70-50 with four minutes remaining. A late Chargers run would close the gap to the final score of 71-59.
Lisa Bolander led the way offensively with 19 points along with three rebounds and three assists. Grace Bennett added 15 points and six rebounds while Karla Benitez finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Kassie Little produced a game-high ten rebounds off the bench in the win.
The ‘Canes are now 1-1 on the season and are tied with the Mount Allison University Mounties on points at two and are one of five teams with one loss in the early going of the season. The Chargers are 0-4 and are tied with the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves for sixth.
In the men’s game, the ‘Canes found themselves down 21-16 after the first quarter and 46-35 at the half, before storming back with a 29-14 third quarter to take a 64-60 lead into the final frame. The ‘Canes would open up a 73-65 lead with just under five minutes remaining before Crandall came back to tie it at 76-76. A pair of Jordan Holness free throws and a steal by Jashujan Downey on the inbounds pass secured the 78-76 win.
Bryce Corless had a game-high 24 points while adding five rebounds. Holness was right behind in scoring with 22 points as well as six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Downey was the other ‘Canes player to reach double figures, adding 15 points along with three rebounds, and three steals.
The ‘Canes move to 2-0 on the season and sit atop the ACAA standings. The Chargers are now 3-1 and in second play based on win percentage.
The Hurricanes return to the court next Saturday when the travel to Saint John, New Brunswick to take on the UNBSJ Seawolves with game times set for 2pm for the women and 4pm for the men.
