The Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) basketball season gets off to a hot start this Saturday for the Hurricanes when they welcome their rivals from Halifax, the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics, to the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement. The women tip-off at 2pm followed by the men’s game at 4pm.
It will be 602 days in the making as these two programs squared off on March 7, 2020 in the men’s and women’s ACAA Championship semi-final games; the Mystics claimed the victory in both matchups. The ‘Canes have not seen intercollegiate action since as the 2020-21 ACAA season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We have a great group of young women that are excited to get out there and play,” shared women’s Hurricanes head coach, Chris Connolly. “I think we have a nice mix of key returning players and some great additions to the program.”
The women’s Hurricanes are seeking their fourth conference championship in the programs history, having won the championship in 2015, 2016 and 2017; the Hurricanes also have won two Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national medals in the past.
The men’s Hurricanes will have their eyes on conference banner number eight. The ‘Canes won seven-straight ACAA championships between 2013 and 2019, a run that also included four national medals.
“We’re thrilled for the players to get back on the court after missing last season,” shared Hurricanes men’s head coach, Josh Whitty. “We’re grateful for the hard work of so many to make it happen. Our players are excited about the chance to represent Holland College throughout the season.”
You can catch the action live at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement, located on-campus at the Holland College Prince of Wales campus in Charlottetown. Proof of vaccination, a valid government issued ID, and a mask are required for all spectators to view the game.
