Director of Athletics and Recreation

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Athletics & Recreation provides leadership in the development, delivery, and growth of competitive athletic and recreation programming at Holland College. This position fosters excellence in student-athlete experiences, operational management, student and community engagement. 

With oversight of athletic staff, facilities, events, and budgets, the Director plays a key role in promoting health, wellness, student engagement and community involvement through inclusive, high-quality programming and external partnerships. 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Athletics & Recreation Department, aligning programming with the College’s mission, values, and strategic goals. 
  • Plan, manage, evaluate, and coordinate competitive and recreational athletics, including student-athlete development and performance. 
  • Supervise department staff, coaches, and canes camp personnel, including recruitment, training, scheduling, performance reviews, and discipline when required. 
  • Manage facility operations at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement, including scheduling, staffing, and rental agreements. 
  • Foster strong relationships and communications with internal departments, academic programs, and external organizations including ACAA (Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association) and CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association). 
  • Oversee marketing, branding, and public relations initiatives for athletics, including websites, social media, and press releases. 
  • Develop and manage budgets for the Athletics Department and related initiatives, ensuring compliance with College policies. 
  • Lead and support the planning and execution of athletic events, Canes camps, and Hurricanes Academy programs. 
  • Develop and implement athletic policies, procedures, and eligibility standards in line with governing bodies. 
  • Coordinate business development and fundraising strategies to support and expand athletic offerings. 
  • Promote a balance between academic success and athletic excellence for student-athletes. 
  • Ensure health and safety compliance and maintain accurate internal and external records related to athletics. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary degree in Sport Management, Kinesiology, Business, Education or a related field. A graduate degree in a related field is an asset. 
  • Proven management experience with a minimum 5 years of progressive experience in a sport environment.
  • Experience in coaching or the development of elite athletes is an asset. 
  • Significant leadership experience, preferably in a post-secondary environment. 
  • Strong knowledge of collegiate sport regulations and experience working with governing bodies is an asset. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Experience in budget development, financial oversight, and fundraising initiatives. 
  • Knowledge of facility management, marketing practices, and event coordination in athletic environments. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead teams, manage projects and drive performance.
