This course is intended to prepare the student for the Transport Canada ASTRO2 exam which will test your theoretical knowledge of nautical astronomy, and your ability to practically apply this knowledge to calculate a position using various celestial bodies. The ASTRO2 exam is a three-hour exam and consists of 15 multiple choice questions worth 2 marks each, and 5 practical questions worth 10-20 marks each. This course requires prior knowledge of math concepts such as order of operations, algebra and trigonometry.
For the exam you will be given the Nautical Almanac for a particular year, and a copy of Norie’s Nautical Tables. You are required to memorize all pertinent formulae. We recommend that you spend a minimum of six weeks preparing for this exam.

This course also includes the Knowledge of Marine Sextant Certificate. In order to receive this certificate, an in-class session with the instructor is required, during which you will learn how to handle and use a marine sextant. This certificate must be presented to the Transport Canada examiner prior to your oral exam in order to receive your certificate of competency. The schedule for marine sextant training is flexible – please contact the instructor to make arrangements.
