Holland descendant donates painting to college

George Dalton, a direct descendant of Samuel Holland, has donated a portrait of the noted surveyor to Holland College for inclusion in a display honouring the famous surveyor on the Prince of Wales Campus.

The portrait was painted by artist Bernadette Kernaghan, who trained at the Emily Carr Institute and Simon Fraser University, and taught art in Vancouver schools for more than 20 years. She and her husband Eddy Schwartz moved to the Island when they retired a few years ago, and she continues to paint and to teach privately and for the Seniors College.

“The painting is a welcome addition to our collection of Holland items,” said Holland College vice president Mike O’Grady. “Over the years, the Dalton family have generously donated several pieces that form the core of our Holland Collection, which helps us to explain to students who Samuel Holland was, and why our college bears his name.”

George Dalton agreed.

“I was indeed grateful for the opportunity to present this painting of Samuel Holland to Holland College in memory of my late mother, Helen Holland Dalton. She grew up in Tryon and never forgot her roots. When Holland College was named, she became a close friend of Dr. Don Glendenning, and both shared the vision of starting a Holland collection. Now a first rate collection is proudly exhibited at the college. Credit is due to all the staff and all the members who served on the Samuel Holland Committee over the years. This painting kind of puts the frosting on the cake, thanks to Bernadette.”

“It was a great honour to be asked to participate in the commemoration of such a significant PEI historical figure,” Ms. Kernaghan said.

The painting and the rest of the Holland items are located in a display in the lobby of the Centre for Applied Science and Technology on the Prince of Wales Campus during regular business hours.
