Agreements open doors for college students and staff

Holland College and St. Francis Xavier University recently signed a memorandum of understanding and two articulation agreements, promoting opportunities for research and collaboration and providing graduates of the college’s Music Performance program with pathways to continue their studies at the world-renowned university.

The two articulation agreements enable graduates of Holland College’s School of Performing Arts Music Performance program to enter directly into the third year of either the Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts Honours Music degree program at St. FX. The School of Performing Arts is a partnership between Holland College and Confederation Centre of the Arts.

Alan Dowling, head of the Music Performance program at Holland College, said the agreement will provide graduates with an opportunity to take their skills to the next level.

“The music program at St. FX has an international reputation. Graduates from our program will be able to complete a degree in just two years. It’s a cost-effective way for students to continue their post-secondary education in the field of music,” he said.

Holland College vice president Michael O’Grady said articulation agreements such as this are mutually beneficial.

“In an increasingly competitive market, where students are looking for smooth transitions in their post-secondary experience, it is of great value to colleges and universities to forge agreements that facilitate the flow of students between institutions,” he said.

In addition to the articulation agreements, the over-arching memorandum of understanding promotes educational and academic collaboration between the two institutions. Activities in this collaboration could include increasing joint educational and research activities to create additional pathways for student learning, and expanding on efforts to collaborate in other areas such as applied research, programming, student services and recruitment.
