Human Services students host portfolio celebration day

Graduating students from Holland College’s Human Services program hosted a portfolio celebration day at the college’s Charlottetown Centre today. Portfolio day provides an opportunity for potential employers, members from the disability community, students and faculty to get together with Human Services students to view their professional portfolios and celebrate the successes of the class of 2008.

The Honourable Doug Currie, Minister of Social Services and Seniors, noted the special qualities needed to work in the human services field.

“As human services professionals, you demonstrate attributes of empathy, patience and honesty that will allow you to work with our community’s most vulnerable individuals,” he said.

“As a former principal and now as Social Services and Seniors minister, I recognize these attributes and the value that graduates of this program offer as educational assistants, providing one-on-one work with families and the community.”

The Human Services program was established in 1974 to meet the needs for trained workers in the field of disabilities. Since its beginning, graduates have been in demand and have contributed to the enhancement of services provincially and nationally. Graduates of this program have a broad knowledge base and skills in Human Services in general, and in the field of intellectual disabilities in particular.
