Board of Governors elects new Chair and Vice Chair

The Holland College Board of Governors recently elected local businessman Ray Murphy to the position of Chair; and Kathy Hambly,
Executive Director of the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce, to the position of Vice Chair.

Mr. Murphy, who is well known and respected for his commitment to health promotion and health education in Prince Edward Island, recently received the prestigious Order of Prince Edward Island in recognition of his community work.

He has served on the board of governors for the college for the past four years, and has also worked with the United Way of PEI, Salvation Army Red Shield campaign, and Sherwood Parkdale Rural Minor Hockey Association. He was a board member and Chair of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation, Chair of the QEH Endowment Fund, and a councillor for the Town of Stratford; and is board member of the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust and co-chair of the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Mr. Murphy said the college's ability to respond quickly to the labour requirements of various sectors has been crucial to meeting the needs of employers and prospective employees alike.

"Holland College has programs that deal with the times: computing, critical thinking, and the capacity for change. What skills will be required in the coming years, nobody knows. Holland College is here to educate for today and be prepared to deal with the changes and challenges in the future."

Mr. Murphy and his wife Carolyn reside in Stratford. They have two sons, Ryan, who resides in Stratford; and Jeffrey, who resides in Ottawa.

Kathy Hambly has been a member of the Holland College Board of Governors for the past year. She has been Executive Director of the Charlottetown Chamber since 2005. Prior to that, she was the Director of Marketing and Development for the Confederation Centre of the Arts for eight years.

Keenly interested in small business and entrepreneurship, Ms. Hambly has mentored countless women in business over the years, and was involved in the first Women in Business Association on PEI.
Ms. Hambly is the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award for her work on the board of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of P.E.I.; and is a former board member of Junior Achievement of P.E.I.
She has three daughters, Kelly, Becky, and Emily McMillan, and is married to Sandy Gillis.
