DaimlerChrysler Canada donates vehicle

Students in the Automotive Technology program in Holland College's Summerside Centre have a new piece of equipment to train on, thanks to DaimlerChrysler Canada and Summerside Chrysler Dodge.

A 2001 Dodge Ram valued at approximately $20,000 was presented to the program by DaimlerChrysler Canada through the Vehicle Donations Committee of the corporation's Service Training and Equipment programs.

Clifford Murray, one of the of Automotive Technology program's instructors, said the retired vehicle will serve as a valuable learning tool for students in the program.

"Students will be able to gain hands-on experience working on the engine," he said.

When Murray learned that the program was going to receive the truck, he approached the local dealer, Summerside Chrysler Dodge.

"I contacted the dealership to see if they could help out with the shipping costs, instead they offered to cover the complete cost. They even made the arrangements to get the vehicle shipped here," he said, noting that the dealership has been very supportive of the Automotive Technology program for many years.

Dick Ripley, President and General Manager of Summerside Chrysler Dodge, said the dealership was pleased to be able to arrange for the trucks delivery.

"I am happy that we were able to help out the Automotive Technology program," he said.

"The students at Holland College represent the future automotive technicians in our industry and I feel we have to do what we can to support them. It is just as important to our future as it is to theirs. This vehicle will provide the students an opportunity for hands-on training, allowing them to apply what they have learned in the classroom."

In 2005, DaimlerChrysler Canada donated over 80 vehicles to educational institutions across Canada. All vehicles designated for donation are either pre-production vehicles or are slightly damaged and unfit for sale to a customer.

"The company hopes to encourage students to consider careers as automotive technicians, engineers and dealership employees," said John Bolton, Manager, Service and Training Programs, DaimlerChrysler Canada.

"Having students work on a vehicle like a Dodge Ram gives them a chance to learn the latest in advanced engineering, design technology and mechanical application and makes them better employees when they apply their skills in the real world."
