Photographer Alanna Jankov has donated her nationally acclaimed exhibition Heroes: Common People, Uncommon Acts to the Holland College Foundation, Foundation Chair Kim Horrelt announced today.
The show features portraits of individuals who have made extraordinary sacrifices or taken risks to help others. The images include people who have acted decisively in moments of crisis as well as those who have devoted their lives to giving to others. From a young boy who saved his sister's life, to a senior who has dedicated his time to improving the lives of people in Central America, every picture tells a unique and moving story. One of the images, a portrait of Second World War veteran Tom Ross, was purchased by Veterans' Affairs Canada to promote the Year of the Veteran.
Ms. Horrelt said the exhibition is a valuable addition to the Foundation's collection.
"We have quite an extensive collection of artifacts related to Samuel Holland," she noted, "but this exhibition is a wonderful example of the professional abilities and creative talent of the college's graduates. The Foundation Board and staff appreciate Alanna's generosity and her allegiance to the college. We are very proud of her accomplishments, and I'm sure that she will continue to engage, challenge, and impress art lovers with her insightful and innovative photography."
Ms. Jankov, who graduated from the college's Photography program in 1988, said that she donated the collection as a way to acknowledge the value of the training she received as a student.
"Holland College got me started in photography, and I'm glad that the Foundation can provide a permanent home for my work," she said. "The college is an important part of the community and culture of the province, so it's fitting that this collection of images of people who have given so much to the community should be in its care."
The exhibition, which originally opened at the Kier Gallery in Charlottetown and was featured at Eptek Centre in Summerside, is currently housed on the second floor of Montgomery Hall on Kent Street in Charlottetown. The Foundation plans to take the exhibition to Holland College centres across the province so that students and staff alike will have the opportunity to enjoy it.
Ms. Jankov's latest exhibition, 2 to 7 - While You Sleep, opens at the Kier Gallery, 132 Richmond Street, Charlottetown, September 30th at 7:30pm. The exhibition documents the lives of people who live on what she calls, "the other side of the clock" - between two and seven o'clock in the morning. Ms. Jankov cordially invites the public to her opening reception.

The primary purpose of the Holland College Foundation is to provide financial support for Holland College students by raising, coordinating and managing funds for scholarships, awards, bursaries, research and special projects.
