Al Swim appointed to Order of Canada

Issued by Alex MacAulay, President of Holland College on July 5, 2002:

On behalf of the Holland College community, it is with great pleasure that I extend to Al Swim, Executive Director of the Justice Institute of Canada, our sincere congratulations on his appointment to the Order of Canada. The announcement was made on Thursday by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.

The Order of Canada pays tribute to Canadians who exemplify the highest qualities of citizenship and whose contributions enrich the lives of their contemporaries. This very prestigious award is considered this country?s highest honour for lifetime achievement.

Al has been named a member of the Order for his commitment to the professional development of the law enforcement community. The Governor General's citation for Al reads:

Allan Stewart Swim, C.M., C.D. Slemon Park, P.E.I.-
As an educator and administrator, he has demonstrated a life-long commitment to the professional development of the law enforcement community. Currently Executive Director of the Atlantic Police Academy, he has restructured this institution and re-engineered its programs. His innovative approach and dedication have made the Academy a national leader in its field and have enhanced its reputation internationally. In addition, he has been a driving force in the formation of the International Association of Directors of Police Academies. He is also often consulted by professional law enforcement policy makers and by educational institutions.

Al's commitment and passion for the APA and the Justice Institute are unquestioned. However, it is wonderful to see that his work and dedication have now been nationally recognized in such a significant manner as his appointment to the Order of Canada.

Congratulations, Al!
