by Maria Driscoll

From among 150 Canadian Community Colleges and over 63,000 staff members, Holland College's Terence McGaughey is #1!

The Manager of the Media Production Unit at Holland College, Terence was presented with the prestigious 2001 Association of Canadian Community Colleges National Staff Excellence Award at the ACCC Annual Conference held recently in Windsor, Ontario. ACCC, of which Holland College is a member, is the national, voluntary membership organization created in 1972 to represent colleges and institutes to government, business and industry, both in Canada and internationally.

"Terence is integral to the operation of Holland College and works closely with administration, instructors and students," stated Gerry Brown, President of ACCC.. "He is recognized by his colleagues as a man who works effectively behind the scenes at the College, doing whatever it takes to get the job done in the most efficient, professional manner. We are very pleased and proud to nationally honour Terence for his contribution to his College and community."

As part of ACCC's Excellence Awards Program, Terence was the recipient of the first annual Holland College Staff Excellence Award. Using the criteria identified by ACCC, a call for nominations was made to all Holland College staff and the Selection Committee made the unanimous decision of Terence to receive the award. He was nominated by his peers at the College, students and members of the community who felt he exemplified the criteria of "making an exceptional contribution within the College and in the community and who serves as a model of excellence for all staff." From the local level, Terence's name was put forth to the National Committee.

"I owe this award to the fine people that I work with both inside and outside of Holland College. Their cooperation and teamwork makes it possible for me to have won this award. My thanks to them for making my job easier and so enjoyable." said Mr. McGaughey.

A native Prince Edward Islander, Terence is a graduate of Holland College's Commercial Design and Media Technology programs. In 1976, upon completion of these programs, he joined the College staff in the Audio Visual Unit as an Audio Visual Technician. Since that time, Terence has held a number of positions in an ever-changing Media Production Unit. He is now the sole staff person in this Unit providing media production services to the College's 13 centres across the Island.

"Terence has always taken pride in Holland College and its' role in the community," stated Alex MacAulay, President of Holland College. "He understands and appreciates the values and philosophy of the College and works hard to ensure that he takes every opportunity to project Holland College in a positive image."

In addition to his work at Holland College, Terence is actively involved in the PEI Regiment. He has been an active member of the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves, through his role as a Warrant Officer for the past twenty-four years. A dedicated and committed family man, Terence resides in New Argyle along with his wife Shirley St. Germain and their two daughters, Laurette and Denise.
