CAE311H METHODS AND STRATEGIES: AN INTRODUCTION
This course introduces basic teaching methods and strategies for people involved with instructing or training adults. Learners will explore topics such as characteristics of the adult learner and factors that affect adult learning. Learners will have the opportunity to design a course and develop lesson plans that incorporate teaching methods and appropriate assessment and evaluation tools.
CAE422 METHODS AND STRATEGIES: INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN FOR ON-LINE LEARNING
This course provides the foundational skills necessary for designing and delivering a course on‐line. Students explore different online learning platforms, compile content, and develop teaching strategies and authentic assessments appropriate to the on-line learning environment.
CAE301H PRACTICUM IN ADULT EDUCATION
In this course learners will gain practical, field-based experience connected to an individualized learning contract and completed through actual teaching/learning settings. Particular attention will be paid to the integration of teaching strategies with adult learning models.
ED308 INTEGRATING ACTIVITY BASED LEARNING IN ADULT EDUCATION
In this course, learners will have the opportunity to examine and customize a variety of strategies designed to make training and learning active. Participants will share aspects of their personal teaching frameworks and explore theoretical perspectives supporting activity-based learning. Using these foundations, learners will be challenged to add new activities to their teaching repertoires by examining the basics of active training, team learning, peer teaching, and independent learning. Finally, the group will develop its own activity based "how-to" manual which can be used when facilitating future training.
ED362 COMMUNICATION PRACTICES
This course covers both interpersonal and group communication skills necessary for adult learning. It teaches students to express thoughts and ideas in clear, well-defined terms both orally and in writing. Emphasis is placed on developing skills in active listening, public speaking, and small group facilitation, as well as in understanding the variables that affect human communication. Participants are encouraged to identify their own communication challenges through study, research, presentation, and self-reflection.
ED363 UNDERSTANDING THE ADULT LEARNER
In the 21st century, Adult Learning is a key topic for decision-makers and policy-makers, as society tries to adapt to a quickly changing world in which productive citizens must repeatedly engage with new ideas, skills, and attitudes towards the world. This course examines the principles and processes of adult learning. Topics covered include universal design for learning, personal experiences, social and cultural factors that affect learning, learning in formal and non-formal environments, and the characteristics of adult learners.
ED364 ASSESSMENT OF ADULT LEARNING
This course helps the participant discover the meaning of assessment and evaluation in adult education within the post-secondary environment. An investigation of a variety of assessment techniques and evaluation tools will enable experienced and new adult educators to assess and evaluate learning.
ED368 CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
Through a blended delivery, learners will examine a variety of curriculum development models. Learners are encouraged, through class discussion and an online forum, to consider the impact of curriculum development on student learning. In addition, learners will be encouraged to examine how an array of curriculum design models can be used to enhance their own teaching/training practice. Learners will identify the components of a comprehensive curriculum design while simultaneously reflecting upon personal perspectives of the curriculum development experience. Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to assess and revise a variety of curriculum components.
ED373 INCLUSION AND DIFFERENTIATION IN ADULT LEARNING
In this course, learners are introduced to inclusive education and to strategies and practices for supporting diverse learners in adult education contexts. The course gives an overview of learning differences, social/emotional/mental health, and diagnoses that impact learning. It also provides suggestions for teaching strategies to encourage adults to learn from their strengths and increase independence. Of particular interest are the use of assistive technology, self-advocacy, principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and awareness of services available to adult learners.
