Job Description

The Heritage Maintenance Worker repairs and maintains the physical infrastructure of the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation, consisting chiefly of Foundation buildings (including numerous heritage structures) and surrounding grounds. The position assists site managers, curators and other staff, preparing sites for opening and closing, and overseeing construction and repair work by contractors and seasonal employees, as well as moving artifacts and assisting with setting up exhibitions Duties will include:

  • Maintaining interior and exterior of buildings including repairs, painting and renovations with an eye for the need to preserve and conserve heritage structures and artifacts;
  • Tending to grounds and creating new gardens, paths, fences, and structures;
  • Building, moving and storing museum exhibits;
  • Preparing spaces for lectures, films and other events including setting up chairs and stages, screens, and moving and storing artifacts/displays;
  • Delivering materials, supplies and equipment to the seven Museum and Heritage sites and the Collections Facility;
  • Supervising contractors, and facilitating the work of employees;
  • Managing construction projects from start to finish according to specifications, schedule and budget;
  • Preparing and/or obtaining estimates for construction work;
  • Advising of capital work needed at sites;
  • Contacting suppliers and contractors, purchasing materials and organizing storage of materials;
  • Ensuring all repairs and renovations are done to standard and are safe for visitors and employees;
  • Reporting regularly on progress of all projects to supervisor and Executive Director; and • Other related duties as required

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Considerable experience in construction and/or trades work;
  • Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds; and
  • A valid driver's license.

Other Qualifications:

  • Museum and Heritage experience or education is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing work priorities
  • Occupational Health & Safety & Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training is preferred
  • Fall Protection Training is preferred
  • Bilingualism is considered an asset Preference will be given to UPSE Civil Employees as per the UPSE Civil Collective Agreement.
