Job Description
The Camp Counselor will be responsible for providing encouragement and support to campers between the ages of 13-17 who have disabilities. They will work as part of a team and will be required to take direction from supervising staff in regards to already established programs. However each staff is encouraged to be creative and provide input and new ideas for programming in order to keep our programs fresh and innovative. The camp councilor will be a positive role model for each camper in the Community as well as utilizing the principles of normalization.
Our program will provide skill development, problem solving, recreation, sports, events, tourist sites, crafts, games etc.. Staff will be required to follow a daily schedule and follow a regular pick up and drop off schedule for clients as well as be comfortable driving a 7 passenger van. In addition:
- Opportunity to work in our Day Program with teens and adults.
- Possible casual work available after summer camp.
- Initiate dialogue with the staff team, as needed, to facilitate campers with the development of social skills, and problem solving for difficult camper behavior.
- Collaborate with senior staff to communicate with parents of campers
- Liaise with the parents of campers in a positive, supportive manner.
- Lead program activities including recreation, sports, arts, games, social skills and community trips
- Assist with program planning and coordinating daily schedules
- Support campers with peer to peer relationship skill building, communication games and personal development experiences that build self confidence
- Engage in self-reflection when receiving constructive performance feedback from management
Qualifications
- Post-secondary student or professional in education, child and youth studies, recreation, psychology, social work, Human Services, or related experience.
- Strong asset: previous camp or youth program experience, or experience working with children with disabilities or special needs.
- Ability to follow verbal and/or written directions/procedures
- Standard First Aid certification is required.
- Experience with crisis management and de escalation is strongly preferred. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training a strong asset.
- Ability to accompany and supervise participants in a variety of environments including aquatic and outdoor
- Successful candidates will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check

- Schedule:Camp hours 8-4:30 (6 - 8.5 hour shift); Day shift (Monday to Friday). No weekends/
- Ability to commute; reliable transportation
