AOTW | Alexa Rancourt Aaron Simmons named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

By Reegan MacAulay

Basketball players, Alexa Rancourt and Aaron Simmons, have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 3.

Rancourt, a fourth-year forward from Charlottetown, P.E.I., helped lead the ‘Canes to a quarterfinal playoff victory during the 2024 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Basketball Championships in Charlottetown. On Friday, Holland prevailed in a roller-coaster of a quarterfinal game against the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies (76-54). On Saturday, Holland gave the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics a hard challenge in semi-final action but fell just short by 10 points (73-63). Rancourt recorded a combined 22 points, 29 rebounds, 13 assists, two steals, and two blocks in the two matches.

Rancourt earned Player of the Game honours after Friday’s game and received multiple accomplishments at the year-end ACAA Basketball Banquet. She was named the 2024 ACAA Player of the Year, a player on the 2024 ACAA 1st All-Conference Team, and a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian.

Holland’s season is now complete, finishing with a 10-8 regular-season record (fourth place in the conference) and a semi-final playoff elimination.

Simmons, a first-year guard from Nassau, Bahamas, performed strong in his first-ever conference championships at the 2024 ACAA Basketball Championships in Charlottetown. On Friday, Holland survived a nail-biter against the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves in quarterfinal action (100-98). On Saturday, Holland had a strong start but fell apart against the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics (83-63) in semi-final action. Simmons recorded a combined 43 points, seven rebounds, six assists, five steals, and one block in the two matches.

Simmons earned Player of the Game honours after Saturday’s game.

Holland’s season concludes with a 9-9 regular-season record (third place in the conference) and a semi-final playoff elimination.
