Hurricanes Weekend Preview: October 3-4

By Noel Arnason

It’s a jam-packed weekend for the Hurricanes, with every fall team in action and the rugby 7s team hosting its home opener.

Here’s what’s happening Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, in the ACAA, AFL and ACBA.

Football

The football team will square off at home against the UNB Reds after its big 28-27 overtime win last weekend in Fredericton in a White Out game. A win for the Hurricanes will, at minimum, lock up second place in the AFL, with the opportunity to still finish first in the regular season.

Players to watch on offence are third-year quarterback Troy McLaren and rookie running back Greg Sutton. On defence, watch fourth-year defensive back Mathis Blais and second-year linebacker Brex MacLeod.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team looks to build on its six-point weekend as it heads back on the road to Halifax. Wins this weekend can put the Hurricanes in third place in the ACAA.

On Saturday, they face the UKC Blue Devils at 1 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. matchup against the MSVU Mystics on Sunday.

Players to watch are fourth-year winger Kristyn Taylor and third-year midfielder Karissa George.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer team heads back on the road this weekend with the women’s soccer team, chasing the UNBSJ Seawolves in the standings for first place.

On Saturday, they take on the UKC Blue Devils at 3:15 p.m., followed by a 3:15 p.m. matchup against the MSVU Mystics on Sunday.

Players to watch are second-year centre-back Walid Lema and second-year winger Harrison Munro.

Baseball

The baseball team is still looking for its first win of the season this weekend. It has been a tough season so far, and the team has learned that nothing is given to them for free.

On Saturday, the Hurricanes head to Fredericton to take on the UNB Reds in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. On Sunday, they return home for a doubleheader against the St. Francis Xavier X-Men at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Players to watch are fourth-year pitcher and outfielder Matthew Peacock, coming off a Male Athlete of the Week performance, and rookie pitcher and centre fielder Wil White.

Rugby

The women’s rugby team has its alumni home opener tournament on Saturday at Co-Op Field.

At 11 a.m., they first face the UNBSJ Seawolves, then at noon they battle the Dalhousie Rams. At 2 p.m., they will face the Seawolves again, and at 4 p.m. they take on the Rams in their final game of the day.

Players to watch are second-year Hannah Whalen and third-year Tess Jesty.

Cross Country

The cross-country team has its second meet of the season this weekend at Crandall. The women’s race kicks off at noon, followed by the men’s race at 1:15 p.m.

Racers to watch are second-year Ben Perrin and second-year Emilie Doucette.
