Holland Hurricanes women’s volleyball season preview

By Noel Arnason

The Hurricanes women’s volleyball team is entering the season with lots of fresh faces and some familiar veterans looking to lead them into ACAA championship contention.

After a successful pre-season at the women’s Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Mount Allison University this past weekend, the Hurricanes finished with a 2-2 record, earning wins against the UKC Blue Devils and the Dalhousie AC Rams. Their best set came against the Rams in a 25-3 win.

Fifth-year Abby MacDonald is expected to continue putting up big numbers after winning offensive player of the year for the Hurricanes last season. She also led the league in hitting percentage and blocks per set.

MacDonald isn’t the only middle to watch this season, as second-year Ariah Pot is stepping into a bigger role as a starter after putting up big numbers at the Tip-Off Tournament.

Fourth-year libero Jaqui Jubinville is holding down the defence for the Hurricanes. She was a team captain last year and recorded 147 digs on the season. Holland will lean on her to provide stability while defending against opposing attacks.

Fourth-year Maria Moores will also be an important piece of the Hurricanes’ offence on the right side after recording multiple high-kill games last season.

Rookies Payton Dolyny, Madeline Simonsen and Ella Weeks are looking to make a name for themselves on the outside. They have big shoes to fill as they step into significant roles previously held by key veterans.

The Hurricanes’ season begins at home this weekend, with the team hosting the UKC Blue Devils on Oct. 24 and 25.
