Hurricanes Weekend Preview - February 21-22, 2026

By Reegan MacAulay

The Holland Hurricanes basketball, hockey, and track & field programs are in action on the weekend of Saturday, Feb. 21, and Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026.

Most notably, both basketball teams are set to finish their regular-season campaigns at home, the women’s hockey squad will close out the home portion of their regular season, and the track & field club is prepping for a championship event.

Here’s what to follow for this weekend in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) and Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) regular-season action.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball Hurricanes look to end the regular season strong and snap a five-game skid when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday and Sunday at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE) in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Following two tough road outings against the conference-leading St. Thomas Tommies last weekend, the Hurricanes will be tasked with not only returning to their winning ways heading into the postseason but also potentially stealing third place in the standings.

Currently, the Hurricanes (9-7, 18 points) are two points behind the Mount Allison Mounties (10-6, 20 points). While Holland concludes the regular season this weekend, Mount Allison is off and won’t be done till after the following weekend, meaning nothing’s certain just yet, but this weekend’s games will be important regardless.

As for UNBSJ, they’re too far back to catch either team, carrying a 6-10 record and 12 points. Despite that, the Seawolves have started to turn things around after going 2-10 in their first 12 games, winning their last four games and building momentum at a crucial point in the season. Holland and UNBSJ previously battled on Nov. 15, 2025, in Saint John, N.B., with the Hurricanes edging out the Seawolves 65-64.

Last weekend saw rookie Sophie LeClair and sophomore – and Hurricanes rookie – Riley Macdonald step up with stout performances, along with sophomore Karissa George, in the absence of reigning rookie of the year Nykeva Brown.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball Hurricanes will join the women in attempting to bounce back from a tough doubleheader last weekend while closing the regular season on their home court.

The men will also host the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday and Sunday at the MCCE and be in the fight for a higher standings position before the postseason.

Holland and Crandall are tied for fourth, each with 6-10 records and 12 points. Holland has to face a team 12 points ahead, fighting for second and on a six-game win streak, while Crandall will do battle with the 2-12 UKC Blue Devils.

The Hurricanes fell 86-65 to the Seawolves in their previous match on Nov. 15, 2025, in Saint John, N.B.

Last weekend featured standout efforts from names like Jahreal Tomlinson, Zachary Dawkins, and Spencer Rossiter, with the latter reaching 500 career ACAA regular-season points, which could provide major fuel for helping his team end the regular season in front of a home crowd with a bang.

Game times are 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Watch live at www.youtube.com/@GoCanesGo.

Women’s Hockey

The women’s hockey Hurricanes will wrap up the home portion of their regular-season campaign with a doubleheader this weekend against the league-leading Acadia Axewomen.

After splitting a two-game series against Cape Breton last weekend, which ended with the team’s second victory of the season and first at home, the Hurricanes aim to keep their recent momentum going and build a win streak as the postseason approaches.

Sitting third (last) in the standings with a 2-6-0 record, Holland is still mathematically eligible to finish second, but would need to pull off a perfect run across four remaining games, both this weekend and next.

There are many hypothetical scenarios at play, but here’s what matters for this weekend: Holland has to win both games and score four points. It doesn’t matter if they win in regulation, overtime, or a shootout, as Acadia is too far ahead and cannot finish worse than second.

Holland could earn three points (one win, one overtime/shootout loss), which might lead to a future tiebreaker in a certain scenario; but, as of press time, current tiebreaker procedures do not favour Holland.

While Acadia and Holland have zero standings conflicts from here on out, one thing is at stake for the Axewomen: the regular-season championship. If they nab at least two points this weekend, it’s officially theirs, so Holland’s performances will play a significant factor for themselves and for how the standings could shake out elsewhere.

Team captain Kristyn Taylor is the latest Hurricanes Female Athlete of the Week, following a two-goal, three-assist effort against Cape Breton last weekend. Cassie Gordon and Josee Allain also produced multi-point games, and rookie goaltender Olivia Lowe captured her first career ACHA victory.

It promises to be another exciting ACHA Championship rematch, especially with several Hurricanes players playing at home for the last time.

Game times are 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 11:15 a.m. Sunday. Watch live at www.youtube.com/@GoCanesGo

Track & Field

The track & field Hurricanes return to the track this weekend for the Atlantic Indoor Track and Field Club Championships on Sunday at the Université de Moncton in Moncton, N.B.

The Hurricanes will take part in several runs and relays, including the 1500m, 60m, and 200m runs, and 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

Notable athletes to watch out for include former Hurricanes Male Athlete of the Week Ben Perrin, Nicholas Fowler, and Bianca Barnet.

Fan Facts!

Saturday’s basketball games will be themed around Elliot, the son of Spencer Rossiter and Kate Desroches.

With Desroches’ support, Rossiter has been balancing school, athletics, and family life while raising Elliot (2) and Millie (1). Not long after birth, Elliot was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which led Spencer to decide to step away from school to care for Elliot. Spencer has since returned to the Hurricanes and Holland College to complete his Sport and Recreation Management diploma.

Elliot’s care involves consistent medical treatment and specialized physiotherapy, including regular travel to the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, N.S., and annual visits to a private physiotherapy clinic in Alberta. The intensive sessions have led to improvements in Elliot’s mobility and development. However, the Alberta treatment is privately funded, meaning costs are not covered.

The Hurricanes community has rallied behind the family with two fundraisers – an online GoFundMe page, linked below, and a “Benefit Game for Elliot,” where, on Saturday, donations will be accepted at the door, and 100% of ticket sales will go directly toward Elliott’s therapy and travel expenses.

The family thanks the Hurricanes community and all for the continuous support.
