Hurricanes Weekend Preview: Oct. 16-18

By Noel Arnason

It’s the last weekend of the regular season for most fall sports teams, with the baseball team hosting the playoffs this weekend at Memorial Field in Victoria Park.

Here’s what’s happening Friday, Oct. 16, Saturday, Oct. 17, and Sunday, Oct. 18, in the ACAA, AFL and ACBA.

Football

With a win this weekend, the football team will have its most successful regular season since 2017, which was also the last time it hosted a playoff game. On Saturday, the Hurricanes hit the road to take on the winless Saint John Falcons. The Hurricanes are looking to bounce back after their loss to the Dalhousie Tigers last weekend and gain momentum heading into their playoff matchup next weekend against the UNB Reds — a dragon they haven’t been able to slay in the playoffs since 2018.

After getting a taste of rookie quarterback Grayson Fox last weekend, Hurricanes fans will get the full experience as he makes his first career start at quarterback.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Canada Games Stadium in Saint John, N.B.

The game is available through AO Live, with a $10 fee to watch.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team still has one more weekend of the regular season after this one and is looking to climb the standings as it sits in fourth place in the ACAA with a 3-3-2 record.

This weekend won’t be any easier, as the Hurricanes take on the second-place UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday. The Seawolves have a 6-2 record.

On Sunday, they face the first-place STU Tommies, who are undefeated at 8-0.

These next two weekends are the most important ones for the women’s soccer team, as two six-point weekends could bump it into second place in the ACAA, which would be a more favourable playoff matchup.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer team also sits in fourth place in the ACAA heading into the second-last weekend of the regular season. The Hurricanes have a 5-3 record and are four points behind first place.

On Saturday, they take on the first-place UNBSJ Seawolves, who have a 6-1-1 record. A win would certainly help the Hurricanes in their quest to finish atop the ACAA.

On Sunday, Holland faces the third-place STU Tommies, who have a 4-1-3 record and are tied with the Hurricanes at 15 points.

A six-point weekend could propel Holland into first place, depending on the results of the second-place UKC Blue Devils.

Baseball

The ACBA playoffs are here, and the Hurricanes will host this year’s championship at Memorial Field in Victoria Park

The Hurricanes finished the year on a heater, riding a three-game winning streak after starting 0-11. Let’s hope some of that momentum carries into this weekend.

As per the ACBA website, here is the weekend schedule.

The ACBA Championship will take place over three days, with the schedule following the approved format based on league direction.

  • Friday, Oct. 16: Opening games and opening ceremonies following the completion of Game 1
  • Saturday, Oct. 17: Round-robin and playoff games
  • Sunday, Oct. 18: Championship game and closing ceremonies

Teams and seeding

Seeding is based on the 2026 regular-season standings and tiebreaking procedures.

  1. UNB Reds
  2. Acadia Axemen
  3. UPEI Panthers
  4. Holland Hurricanes

*Please refer to the ACBA Website for schedule updates throughout the weekend.

General admission

General admission is $10 per day and includes the weekend program. An admissions table will be set up at the entrance to the field throughout the weekend.

Canteen services

An on-site canteen will be set up in the building near left field. Snacks and beverages will be available, but no hot food will be served.

The PEI Marathon is also taking place this weekend, so parking will be limited and many routes and roads to the games will be closed.

Rugby

The women’s rugby team heads to its final regular-season meet this weekend against the Dalhousie Rams, looking for its first win of the season.

Holland sits at 0-7, with its playoff hopes hanging in the balance. The fourth-place Rams have two more wins than the Hurricanes, leaving Holland with plenty to fight for as it looks to close out the regular season on a high note.

Cross Country

Cross country has its final regular-season meet of the year this weekend at Brookvale. Emilie Doucette and Ben Perrin are looking to continue their strong campaigns and earn their first wins before the playoffs.
