Hurricanes Weekend Roundup – February 2-4 Edition

By Reegan MacAulay

Despite multiple cancellations at the hands of Mother Nature, the Holland Hurricanes still came out of the recent weekend (Feb. 2-4) with two ACAA basketball wins on a Friday night at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

Here’s a full breakdown of all your recent ‘Canes action.

Volleyball

Both the women's and men's volleyball teams were handed a weekend off as poor weather and travel conditions forced four games between Saturday, Feb. 3 and Sunday, Feb. 4 at the McMillan Centre to be postponed.

The women’s team was scheduled to play the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies on Saturday and the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics on Sunday, while the men’s team was scheduled to play the Tommies in a doubleheader between Saturday and Sunday.

The date of Wednesday, February 7 has been decided to make up the cancelled games from Saturday between the ‘Canes and Tommies.  The women will take to the court at 4pm, followed by the men’s match at 6pm; both matches take place at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

Makeup dates for the cancelled matches on Sunday versus the Mystics (women) and Tommies (men) have yet to be finalized.

The women’s team will also be in action next Saturday, Feb. 10 with a trip to Halifax, N.S. to play the MSVU Mystics, who are 10-3, third in the conference, and haven’t played Holland yet.

The men’s team also has matches scheduled next Saturday, Feb. 10 with a trip to Moncton, N.B. to play the Crandall University Chargers, who are 1-12, fifth in the conference, and 0-3 against Holland with just one set win against the ‘Canes so far this season.

The women’s game time is at 2 p.m. and the men’s game time is at 3 p.m.

Holland took advantage right off the bat, jumping out to a 12-3 lead. Crandall fought back to close the gap by five points but couldn’t get any closer the rest of the game. The ‘Canes led 18-11 after one quarter and 35-27 at halftime and dominated the third quarter with a nine-point advantage. In the fourth and final quarter, the Chargers scored two more points than Holland, but it wasn’t enough.
