Inaugural "Island Cup" Coming to Charlottetown


Charlottetown, PEI – June 27, 2024 — The Canadian collegiate women's hockey scene is set to host the inaugural "Island Cup" from October 11-14, 2024, at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. This landmark event will feature elite teams from across the nation, showcasing the exceptional collegiate women’s hockey talent in Canada.

The Island Cup, hosted by the Hurricanes from Holland College, is currently set to welcome the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans and Cape Breton University Capers, with additional competing teams being announced soon, adding to the excitement and competitive spirit of the event.

“We are delighted to bring the Island Cup to life, celebrating with collegiate women's hockey players from across Canada," said Albert Roche, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Holland College. "This event is part of our process to develop the sport and create opportunities to showcase women’s hockey. We have always valued our role as hosts and as a catalyst for collegiate sport. We look forward to welcoming all teams to PEI and to giving our team a chance for high-level competition.”

The Eastlink Centre, renowned for its excellent facilities, will serve as the perfect venue for this celebration. Fans can anticipate four days of thrilling hockey action.

Emma Arsenault, goaltender for the Holland Hurricanes and from Searletown, PEI, shared her excitement: “The announcement of the Island Cup is nothing short of exciting for my team and me. We are ready to compete and take the program to the next level, and it’s important to note as a female player that there are people rooting for women’s hockey. These people are the ones making it happen behind the scenes and we couldn’t be more appreciative and excited to kick it off in October.”

Kristyn Taylor, a forward for the Holland Hurricanes from Summerside, PEI, added: "This event will be an amazing way to kick off the season, especially being able to have teams from across the Nation attending. Our league is only going up from here and this is a huge step for women’s collegiate hockey here in Canada. The Holland Hurricanes women’s hockey team will be ready to play and are very excited to be the host of the Island Cup in October, we hope to see our fans out to catch the action!”

John Abbot, General Manager of the Eastlink Centre Charlottetown, expressed his enthusiasm: "The inaugural Island Cup is a welcome addition to our 2024 sport and entertainment line-up. We look forward to hosting this varsity showcase and celebrating women’s hockey here at the Eastlink Centre Charlottetown.”

  • Holland Hurricanes, Prince Edward Island, members of the Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). Three-time Atlantic Champions (2016, 2023, 2024).
  • CBU Capers, Nova Scotia, members of the ACHA. Two-time Atlantic Champions (2012, 2020).
  • SAIT Trojans, Calgary, Alberta, members of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC). Three-time ACAC Champions (2006, 2007, 2011).
