Women’s rugby player Annik Whiten and football player Owen MacLeod have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 15, 2024.
Whiten, a second-year back row/centre from Charlottetown, P.E.I., helped lead the ‘Canes to a season-opening 19-15 win on Sunday against the Mount Allison University Mounties in a crucial ACAA championship rematch. Her efforts set the pace for her squad as she scored two tries, led the attack with a great work ethic from her eight-man position, stole multiple opposition throw-ins, and was a force on defense, making multiple key tackles to secure the win.
Whiten and the 1-0-0 women’s rugby Hurricanes return to action next Sunday, Sept. 22 with another home game against the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies; kickoff is at 2pm at Co-Op Field in Charlottetown.

MacLeod, a third-year linebacker from Barrie, Ontario, helped lead the ‘Canes to a dramatic home-opening 20-11 win against the defending Atlantic Football League (AFL) champions, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds. MacLeod was a pivotal part of a five-sack effort by an aggressive defensive core, and he led the way with two sacks as Holland came back from being down numerous times in the game.
MacLeod and the 1-0-0 football Hurricanes are set to face a fast-paced Dalhousie Tigers team at home next Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1pm. The Tigers routed the Saint John Falcons 69-0 in their Saturday home-opener in Halifax.
