Rugby player, Olivia Lea, and football player, Tyler Newson, have been named the Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 14.
Lea, from Cornwall, PEI, is a first-year fly-half with the ‘Canes. She led the Hurricanes offence in a very close road game on Thursday versus the Mount Allison University Mounties. Lea controlled the attack with her precision ball distribution and strong runs, contributing to the ‘Canes point total with penalty goals and one convert. Her leadership wasn’t limited to the offensive side of the ball as she was a dominant force on defence, making many key tackles.
The Hurricanes, now 2-3 and in third in the ACAA standings. The ‘Canes will conclude their regular season this Sunday in Fredericton, NB when they take on the 0-4, St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies at 2pm.

Newson, from Cornwall, PEI, is a third-year linebacker with the Hurricanes. While the ‘Canes would have wished for a better outcome on Saturday in Fredericton in a 51-2 loss versus the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds, Newson demonstrated true leadership, hard work and dedication throughout the game. He played hard on every single play, pushing his teammates to do the same.
The ‘Canes, now 3-2 and second in the AFL standings, will conclude their regular season this Sunday in Halifax, NS when they take on the 5-0, Dalhousie University Tigers at 4pm.
