The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams picked up wins on Saturday in Charlottetown versus the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season action.
The ‘Canes women began the day with a straight sets victory before the men earned the win in four sets; both matches were played at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement (CCE).
The ‘Canes women used set scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-19 to continue their undefeated regular season.
Abby Hyndman and Sam Gerbig each had nine kills to lead the attack for the Hurricanes with Kateia Barenaba adding four.
Marissa Macaulay had a game-high 23 assists while Dana Trainor led a balanced defensive effort with 13 digs. Calandra Bychyk and Gerbig each added five digs with Amanda de Carvalho Brito adding four as eight other players had at least two digs in the win.
With the victory the Hurricanes improve to 9-0 on the season and continue to lead the conference standings while the Seawolves fall to 2-7 and sit in seventh place.
The ‘Canes will return to action on Friday, January 24 at 7pm in Sackville, New Brunswick to visit the Mount Allison University Mounties. The Mounties are currently sitting alongside the ‘Canes for top spot in the ACAA standings with a 9-1 record this season. The ‘Canes won the previous meeting with the Mounties in four sets on December 3 in Charlottetown.
The women’s Hurricanes return to action on home court on Sunday, January 26 when they host the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams at the CCE at 2pm.
In the men’s game, the ‘Canes claimed the win over the Seawolves with set scores of 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22.
Gordon Veitch led the offensive attack for the Hurricanes with 15 kills followed closely by Cole MacKey who had 14; Nathan Willss added eight in the win.
Simon Archibald and Brandon Hastings split setting duties, recording 22 and 18 assists respectively. Alex Joudrey led the ‘Canes defensively with 13 digs with Archibald adding 11 and Veitch chipping in with nine.
The ‘Canes now move to 2-6 on the season with the victory and are in fourth place just behind the Seawolves who fall to 3-5 on the year.
The men’s team will take the court next on Saturday, January 25 when they make the long drive to Church Point, Nova Scotia to take on the Université de Sainte-Anne (USA) Dragons at 2pm. The Dragons are 4-5 and in second place in the ACAA. In matches on November 2 and 3 in Church Point, the Dragons were victorious in both matches in five and four sets respectively.
The next home game for the men’s Hurricanes is scheduled for Saturday, February 15, also against the Dragons.
Both the men’s and women’s Hurricanes were set to host games this past Sunday at the CCE, however due to the heavy snowfall in the forecast these games will be rescheduled for a later date. The women were set to host the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils and the men were to face the Seawolves once again.
