The Holland Hurricanes men’s volleyball teams lost in straight sets to the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies on Saturday at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement (CCE) in Charlottetown. This was the first match of 2020 for the Hurricanes in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season action.
Set scores in the match were 25-17, 27-25 and 25-23 for the top-ranked, Tommies.
Gordon Veitch and Nathan Wills led the attack for the Hurricanes in the match with six kills each with Simon Archibald adding five and Nick Blewett chipping in three.
Archibald also led the way in assists with 12 and ended the match with five digs along with Brandon Hastings and Colby Boyle.
With the loss the ‘Canes fall to 1-6 on the season and remain in fourth place in the conference while the Tommies remain atop the standings at 6-1.
The Hurricanes will return to the court on Saturday, January 18 when they host the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves at 3pm at the Holland College CCE; the teams will square off once again at 10am on Sunday as well.
The Seawolves are currently 3-4 and in third-place in the ACAA standings. In three matchups this season, the ‘Canes have won once while the Seawolves claimed the other two matches.
The women’s volleyball Hurricanes were scheduled to play on Sunday at home versus the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils, however, the match was cancelled due to the poor weather conditions; this match will be rescheduled for a later date.
Saturday, January 18 will also mark the next time the women’s volleyball ‘Canes (8-0) hit the court, when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves (2-6) at 1pm at the CCE.
