Important weekend ahead for football/baseball ‘Canes

There are only five games scheduled this weekend for the Holland Hurricanes but they are big ones.  The football Hurricanes continue their Atlantic Football League (AFL) regular season in Halifax, Nova Scotia this Saturday when they take on the Dalhousie University Tigers at 1pm. The men’s baseball ‘Canes host the Tigers at home for a double-header on Saturday before hitting the road on Sunday to take on the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds; game times for both baseball games are 1pm and 3:30pm.

The football ‘Canes enter the weekend at 1-2 and in third place in the AFL standings; they’re coming off of a 43-0 victory last Sunday over the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves.  This is the second time they’ve met the Dalhousie Tigers this season.  The Tigers are currently in second in the AFL with a 2-1 record.  The previous meeting between the Hurricanes and Tigers ended with Dalhousie earning the 35-0 win on September 25 in Cornwall at the Terry Fox Sports Complex.

This is a key game in the AFL as the second half of the regular season begins with the Hurricanes and Tigers battling for home-field-advantage approaching the playoffs.  The game, being played at Wickwire Field, can be viewed live at www.dalfootball.ca.

The Hurricanes next home game takes place on Saturday, October 16 at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall when the Hurricanes challenge the UNBSJ Seawolves.

The baseball Hurricanes look to finish their 2021 Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) regular season with victories against the Dalhousie Tigers and University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds this weekend. The ‘Canes enter the weekend at 10-2 and in first place in the league standings, holding a one-game advantage over the 9-3 Reds; the Tigers are 4-10 and in fifth place.

Saturday’s double-header versus Dalhousie takes place at Legends Field in Summerside as the ‘Canes close out the home portion of their 2021 schedule.  The double-header has games beginning at 1pm and 3:30pm.  The Hurricanes are 2-0 versus the Tigers this season, winning 11-4 and 13-0 on September 12 in Halifax.

Sunday’s games are where things become very interesting as the ‘Canes and Reds hunt for the regular season title at Royals Field.  In two previous matchups this season, the Hurricanes earned victories of 6-4 and 8-1 over UNB on September 18 in Charlottetown.

The Hurricanes will host the top four teams in the standings at the end of the regular season, the UNB Reds, Acadia University Axemen and St. Francis Xavier (St. FX) X-Men at the ACBA Championship at Memorial Field at Victoria Park in Charlottetown, on October 15-17.  The championship will begin on Friday with the opening ceremony, as well as two round-robin games.  The action will continue on Saturday with four more games, before the Atlantic champions are crowned on Sunday in the finals.
