Women’s volleyball player Jenna O’Neill and men’s basketball player Dorrell Bedminster have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 19, 2024.
O’Neill, a fourth-year left-side from Cornwall, P.E.I., helped her team end a five-game losing streak with two straight-set victories in Halifax, N.S. against the UKC Blue Devils over the weekend. While both matches saw 3-0 results, Holland had to fight hard in each set to finish the job. O’Neill recorded 17 kills, 19 digs, two service aces, and one assist across the weekend series, continuing to make her mark as one of the program’s best and a player to keep an eye on going into the 2025 ACAA Volleyball Championships next month, which her team will host.
The women’s volleyball Hurricanes are 7-7 and fourth in the conference, two points ahead of Dalhousie and STU, and four points back of MSVU. Next up for the team is a home-and-away-game split next weekend, with the league-leading, 13-1 Mount Allison Mounties coming to the McMillan Centre on Friday, Jan. 24, and a trip to Moncton, N.B. on Saturday, Jan. 25 to challenge the 3-10 Crandall University Chargers.

Bedminster, a third-year guard from Hamilton, Ontario and in his first year with the Hurricanes, had his best weekend since joining the men’s basketball team for the second half of the regular season earlier this month. In exciting back-to-back matches against the STU Tommies at the McMillan Centre, Holland won 109-82 and 90-64. Bedminster recorded 17 points, a 6-for-10 field-goal record, a 1-for-2 three-goal record, a 4-for-5 free-throw record, nine rebounds, nine assists, and three steals. His addition to the squad has proven to be a steal and will be key in the team’s chase for their ninth ACAA championship and first since 2023.
The men’s basketball Hurricanes are 7-5 and two points behind a second-place tie between UNBSJ and Crandall, with the latter set to be Holland’s next opponent in a must-see McMillan Centre doubleheader next weekend on Saturday, Jan. 25 and Sunday, Jan. 26.
