Program Overview

Please note: There will be no first-year student intake in September 2019.

This program covers everything from photography basics in lighting, exposure and composition to capturing video, mastering Photoshop™ and professional portfolio design. You’ll have access to two on-site studios and a digital lab, where you may work with aspiring models, capture product and still life compositions, or gain insight into the profession from guest professional photographers. Our small classes ensure you have one-to-one guidance from instructors, and field excursions provide an opportunity to photograph some of the most iconic locations on Prince Edward Island! A major emphasis is also placed on your success in the business of photography.

  • Small class sizes provide plenty of one on one instruction time
  • Classroom environment includes two photography studios and a digital lab featuring the latest technology and equipment
  • Multiple field trips are organized each year which allow students to photograph iconic and picturesque locations around Prince Edward Island
  • Professional guest photographers are frequently brought in to provide alternate points of view and unique insights into the profession
  • An opportunity for “On The Job Training” during the final semester offers real-world training and valuable experience
  • A partnership with Essence Model Management allows students to collaborate with creative and knowledgeable aspiring models

Our program area still maintains a fully equipped traditional black & white darkroom. This old-school lab is available to students at all times but mainly used as an introduction to basic photo concepts and during the Black & White Darkroom course in the first semester. A wide selection of 35mm cameras is available to borrow throughout the year.

Portfolio Requirements

Students applying to the Photography and Digital Imaging program must submit a portfolio or collection of images that exemplify the following two key concepts:

  1. Dedication – Images that show a history of interest and personal study in photography over a period of time. These examples may be from school or other related courses, but at least four images should have been generated on your personal initiative.
  1. Exploration – Images that demonstrate that you have researched and practiced at least seven of the major photographic themes, such as landscape, nature detail, candid/formal portraiture, wedding, family, baby/maternity, animal, still life, product, abstract, figure study, sports, news events, astronomy and architecture.
  • Your portfolio should include a total of 14 to 24 images in accordance with the two descriptions above
  • Submissions can be in the form of a website or any other type of online gallery
  • Online submissions should be well organized and easy to navigate for accurate assessment purposes
  • Please use wetransfer.com to send individual files rather than direct email, as attachments may be too large for successful delivery
  • Portfolios can also be submitted on a flash drive or in print form (minimum 5” X 7” prints assembled in a folio or album of good quality)
  • You can supplement your portfolio with links to other online sources such as Facebook albums, Flickr, Instagram, etc.
  • All online materials, links and electronic submissions should be emailed directly to jduchesne@hollandcollege.com
  • In all cases, a reply will be sent as confirmation of receipt

Note: Portfolio will only be kept by the Admissions Department for one year.

Please note: Flash drives and print portfolios must be delivered to the address below, and will only be kept by the Admissions Office for one year. Send your portfolio to:
