Interactive Multimedia

Program Picture

The Interactive Multimedia (IMM) program provides learners with the opportunity to engage with new media technologies in a creative and applied atmosphere. Students learn how to produce usable and attractive interactive products that fuse multiple media elements (text, graphics, animation, audio, video) with programmed and database-driven navigation. Students engage in formal, hands-on instruction, building the three core skill sets necessary for the creation of internet, CD, and DVD environments: 1.Technical production methods 2.Interface and navigational design techniques 3.Project management, business principles, and problem solving.

Contact the Interactive Multimedia program to inquire about short term continuing education opportunities offered during the regular daytime program.

Audio Video Production II

Audio Video Production II

In this course, students will learn advanced audio/video media creation and distribution. Students will create videos for web distribution, and edit and master video for DVD using the Mac video editing platform. They will also select and examine post-production effects software. The course focuses on the technical requirements and limitations of digital video, with particular emphasis on preparing affordable video that still meets broadcast standards.

Introduction to Project Management

Introduction to Project Management

This course focuses on the foundational project management tools and techniques required to create successful interactive multimedia projects. As students create their client-based project over the course of the term, they will examine and analyze all elements of the process using methodologies from this course. Students will acquire experience in managing and developing a fully-integrated design from initial client requirements; into planning, budgeting, and design; and through to implementation and delivery.

Hours: 45
Course Code: IMM-1010

Techniques in Project Management

Techniques in Project Management

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop and display their expertise in new media project management. Individual learners will create a proposal for a term-long project, and document its stages of development. Each student will also select one topic in project management-- graphic design, business plan development, or programming and research-- and develop heightened expertise in that area. They will present their findings and techniques to the group. The project journal will be a record of work accomplished on the self-directed project, and entries will record successes, obstacles, and project prototypes.

Hours: 45
Course Code: IMM-1015

Visual Design I

Visual Design I

This course is designed to enhance a student's understanding of how visual information can be organized and presented in multimedia applications through proper interface design. It focuses on fundamental design principles and methodologies essential for the production of effective multimedia presentations. Computer graphic tools for raster and vector image manipulation are examined in-depth as the means for creating images suitable for the Web, animation, and video formats.

Hours: 45
Course Code: IMM-1020

Visual Design II

Visual Design II

This course looks at creating digital graphics that will work functionally, coherently, and aesthetically in multimedia interfaces. It will emphasize how user-centered visual design can shape information to meet audience needs. It will also furnish practical strategies for ensuring that designs transfer seamlessly to different multimedia production environments, without loss of visual quality. Navigational structures, usability approaches, and streamlined production strategies will all be considered.

Web Design

Web Design

Although Web editors have become more powerful, efficient, and commonplace, it is still important for multimedia creators to know the foundations of HTML, or preferably the XML compliant XHTML. This course will provide such a foundation including text formatting, graphics, links, tables, forms, and cascading style sheets. A visual HTML editor will be used, but with an emphasis on moving between its visual and its code display. The organization of web sites will be examined, as will effective interface design based on two different techniques: table-based layout, and layout using style sheets. The sites that the students create will reflect standards-compliant development, and will be optimized for different users and different kinds of internet-enabled devices. Each student will have his or her own server space and will practice with domain names, FTP, site directory, and file naming conventions. At the end of the term, students will have participated in the design of a functional on-line site.

Hours: 45
Course Code: IMM-1030

Web Development

Web Development

In this course, students will learn to build database-driven websites that can be updated by a visitor or an administrator for sharing or personalizing content. Students will learn how to use web tools to store content in a database, manipulate it with a server-side script, and present to the web client. Control of client-side scripts will also be introduced, particularly for validating user-submitted data. Interface design and information architecture will be examined in light of the newly learned skills.

Interactive Web Animation I

Interactive Web Animation I

In this course, students will use interactive web animation software to create engaging digital environments. Interactivity will be explored to create features where the user not only views content, but also manipulates content. Text, animation, motion graphics, audio and video will be controlled using mouse feedback and keyboard entry. Students will learn to dynamically control visual objects using properties such as rotation, movement, transparency, and size. Using interactive scripting, students will cover programming basics suitable to a designer and advance through use of variables and conditionals.

Hours: 45
Course Code: IMM-1040

Interactive Web Animation II

Interactive Web Animation II

In this course, students will learn to create multimedia environments that are interactive and open to update. Students will use software to create projects that extend viewing alternatives and enhanced media to their users. Another priority will be to learn design methods that allow text and images to be updated by external, user-friendly methods. Ways that data can be passed back and forth will be examined, such as XML.

Multimedia Presentation

Multimedia Presentation

In this course, students learn to design and develop rich multimedia presentations, for commercial or educational purposes. Students will analyze and compare multimedia applications, and learn how to select the right one for their particular communication goal. Students will build and present a multimedia presentation, integrating text, graphics, sound, video, and interactive scripting. Through the production of their individual project, students will acquire experience with stages of the development process. They will also learn how to prepare an estimate of their work, and how to offer a design rationale.

Multimedia Presentation on DVD

Multimedia Presentation on DVD

In this course, students will learn to design and program multimedia applications for DVD delivery. Students will use DVD development software to create presentations that integrate video, sound, slides, and interactivity. Topics include compressing video for DVD, planning the navigation, building interactive menus, outputting the disk, and ensuring quality for set-top playback. The class will consider new and emerging areas in DVD development.

Applicant Selection

Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of:

  • Previous academic achievement (particularly in Graphic Design, Computer Studies or Communications, or equivalent professional experience
  • Response to a questionnaire, and review of submitted examples of professional/project/design/project work

Transcripts, indicating courses completed to date, must be submitted at the time of application.

Portfolio Requirements

Examples of screen-based design (i.e. web design, electronic images, CD-ROMs) always make excellent additions to your application. However, we do not require digital or even strictly graphical work as part of your portfolio. We are looking for pieces that demonstrate dedicated and challenging work with previous projects, both educational and professional, and an indication that these capabilities will shift well into new media. Portfolios submitted should consist of at least four examples of your previous project work.

Those interested in the program are always invited to contact the instructor for more program information, or tours of the Interactive Multimedia lab space.
